Good To Great Grandparenting

Helping Our Grandkids Grow Morally and Spiritually

I believe it is important to consider how we share our values with our Grandkids. It is right on target to think that there is a theme of finesse when it comes to us being our best at this Grandparenting deal.

Maybe, just maybe there is a lesson to be learned in human nature. Maybe there is a consideration of how we impart what is important to us in our faith to those we care most about. My admonition is that you give it a lot of thought. You should pray about it long and hard, in an effort to best communicate your values. I am a firm believer that our Grandkids are not apprentice people, they are real little people living and learning. Actually, I have learned to learn from them as well.

As I was planning to step aside as a Youth Leader, I gathered my Youth Group parents for one last meeting about the kids. I was asked an important question by one of the most supportive parents of two of my extraordinary youth group members. The Mom asked, “What are your takeaways from your years as Youth Minister of this group?” My answer came easily, “I learned about my own walk of faith. I learned so much about spirituality and goodness from these kids. I learned to have faith in the future. This experience fueled my Hope gland.”

"There is no limit to the power of loving."

I have carried that knowledge forward into my role as Grandpa. I seldom talk with my Grandchildren about their faith; however, I never miss a chance to affirm the things they are doing to foster that faith. I do, however, ask them about their thoughts on Good and Evil. I do ask them about what community and/or isolation means to them. I do ask them about things they are doing to grow as a Loving and Lovable human being.

It is very important that we do our best to help our Grandkids grow morally and spiritually. I do feel that it is our sacred duty to be as effective at communicating this subject as is humanly possible. You will find it much easier and more effective when you can intertwine your moral and spiritual values in the context of meeting them where they are.
