Whether for the first time or the umpteenth time, it is still a miraculous experience. There are, however, various considerations each time you are blessed. Many Grandparents are unaware at the time, but it is also a consideration as to which side of the Maternal/Paternal spectrum you occupy. This entire article is about observation. I want to be clear, especially at this peak emotional time for the whole family, that intention does not always equal the best outcomes.
Navigating New Grandparenthood
Please take these ideas as just that—ideas for consideration, not a buzz kill. I have been a grandparent for over 30 years and have over a baseball team of Grands and Great Grands. I have written two books on Grandparents’ Rights and almost 500 articles on Caring Grandparents. I have made being a Good Grandparent a lifelong study and sharing these stories to help others not fall into hidden traps. All of this is to say that you should consider what I say here as being very intentional. My motto is and has always been what is in “The best interest of the Grandchild.” Please revisit my statement from the first paragraph “Intention does not always equal best outcomes.”
Embrace the Joy
Being a grandparent is all about enjoying the best things about being a parent without any nasty bits. You get to love this new little person, nurture them, and grow with them without all the responsibility of being a parent.
Support the Parents
As new grandparents, you can support your child and their partner. Parenthood can be overwhelming, and your experience and wisdom can give reassurance and guidance. Offer a helping hand, whether babysitting, cooking meals, or simply lending a listening ear.
Create Lasting Memories
The arrival of a grandchild brings a renewed sense of purpose and responsibility. As new grandparents, you can create lasting memories and traditions with your grandchild. From reading bedtime stories to taking walks in the park, every moment spent together is precious. You can pass down family traditions, share stories from your childhood, and create a strong bond that will last a lifetime.
Be Mindful of Boundaries
Being a grandparent is a beautiful experience, but being aware is essential. Know that your relationship with your children will indelibly change. Your bond will be more excellent as you share the joys of watching their children grow together. But don’t forget that they’re still your children, and perhaps they miss spending time with you – on your own.
Take Care of Yourself
Being a grandparent can be physically and emotionally exhausting. Taking care of yourself is essential to be the best grandparent possible. Make sure to get enough rest, eat well, and exercise regularly. Remember that taking a break is okay and asking for help when needed.
